Bashkortostan – Switzerland: new ways of cooperation open

27 October 2018

Friendly partnerships have historically been maintained between Bashkortostan and Switzerland. This cooperation intensified markedly in the 2000s through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. A year ago, there was a presentation of Bashkortostan at the Embassy of Switzerland, and a delegation of the Union of Chambers of Commerce of Switzerland-Russia and the CIS countries visited the republic.

At the end of this October, a working meeting was held between the acting Head of Bashkortostan Radiy Khabirov and the delegation of the Swiss Confederation led by the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the country in the Russian Federation Yves Rossier. At the center of their detailed conversation, there were specific prospects for cooperation in the industrial, trade, economic and cultural fields.

Namely, Radiy Khabirov expressed confidence that the trade turnover between Bashkortostan and Switzerland, which last year fell by 14% and amounted to a modest $ 15 million, will be able to increase in the coming years. In particular, the Acting Head of the Republic stressed that the Institute of Petrochemistry of the Republic and Bashgiproneftekhim, which offers projects to create new petrochemical products, are interested in cooperation with Switzerland. In addition, Bashkir Soda Company is ready to joint work.

Yves Rossier, in turn, stressed that the main purpose of the visit of the delegation of Switzerland is the development of investment cooperation. At the same time, foreign partners are interested not so much in tax privileges, but in the investment climate of the region as a whole – transparency in business, openness, readiness for dialogue, and absence of bureaucratic barriers.

Today, required prerequisites are being created for building up cooperation between Switzerland and Bashkortostan. According to Sergey Novikov, Minister of Economic Development of the Republic of Bashkortostan, there are six enterprises successfully established in the republic with the participation of capital from Switzerland.

For example, in the Abzelilovsky district a large-scale investment project of the Omya Group is being implemented to create a marble mining enterprise with an investment volume of about 250 million rubles. Promising areas of cooperation are the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Large companies were represented in the Swiss delegation: in the field of chemical industry – the company Clariant, in the production of oil and gas equipment – the company ENERGAS, in the production of elevators and escalators – the company Schindler, in the production of machine tools – the company Galika.

It should be noted that the visit of the Swiss delegation coincided with the holding of the Russian Energy Forum in Ufa (from October 23 to October 26) at the VDNH-Expo site. This is a traditional annual event for fuel and energy specialists – the largest industry event in the Volga and Urals federal districts. As part of the Forum, an international exhibition of energy and electrical equipment and technologies "Ural Energy" was held.

This year, over 5 thousand people took part in the events of the forum – representatives of ministries and relevant departments, heads of power grid and energy companies, specialists of research and design companies, developers and manufacturers of electrical equipment, structures and materials.

ENERGAS became a member of the Swiss delegation in the Republic of Bashkortostan; its representative also visited the Russian Energy Forum. The ENERGAS Group demonstrates convincing examples of productive interaction between Swiss and Russian businesspersons in the segment of gas treatment and gas supply equipment. An example of this in Bashkortostan is the successfully implemented projects of ENERGAS, the official representative in the Russian Federation of the Swiss company Enerproject SA:
