The ENERGAS fuel gas treatment facility has been reliably operating at northernmost GTPP for 5 years

30 April 2022

The facility of the hangar type supplies turbines with fuel (associated gas) with the specified design parameters for humidity, purity, temperature, pressure and flow rate.

The gas turbine power plant of the East-Messoyakha field is the northernmost mainland GTPP in Russia. Station has been operating since September 2016, its installed capacity is 84 MW, what provides daily electricity generation in the amount of 1.6 million kWh.

Since April 2017, GTPP-84 has been using associated petroleum gas as a fuel, the volume of APG consumption is about 600 thousand cubic meters per day. Thus, the supply of production and infrastructure facilities with their own energy resources is combined with the rational utilization of APG and improvement of ecological situation at the Messoyakha.

The GTPP structure includes more than 70 various facilities. The main equipment of the power plant is six Titan 130 gas turbine units manufactured by Solar Turbines Inc. with a capacity of 14 MW each.

SOLAR Titan 130 is a high efficiency gas turbine unit designed primarily for long-term operation in industrial systems. Titan 130 turbines are characterized by high reliability, durability, ease of maintenance, as well as low emissions due to the low-emission SoLoNOx combustion chamber.

A significant contribution to the reliability and efficiency of GTPP-84 operation is made by the fuel gas treatment facility. For 5 years, this FGTF has been supplying turbines with gas with the specified design parameters for humidity, purity, temperature, pressure and flow rate.

FGTF of the hangar type is housed in separate building and consists of four compressor units (CU), which function alternately – in 3+1 mode (three machines in operation, one in the hot-standby). Operating CUs fully provide the fuel consumption of the power plant, while the fourth machine is ready to be switched on by ATS (automatic transfer switch).

These units, supplied and commissioned by ENERGAS Company, are made based on screw oil-filled compressors. The maximum volume capacity of each CU amounts to 9,000 Nm3 / h; gas flow is controlled by a special two-level regulation system.

The efficient compressor module of units gives a high compression ratio:
- Minimum APG pressure at the suction is 0.2 MPa,
- Rated pressure at the delivery line is 2.95...3.05 MPa.

The design parameters for the gas purity are ensured by the multistage filtration system of CU: protective strainer, inlet filter-scrubber of the 1st stage of purification, oil-gas separator of the 2nd stage and coalescing (safety) filter of the 3rd stage. Eventually, compliance of the fuel with the set requirements is achieved: the content of impurities in gas, supplied to the turbines, does not exceed 5 ppmw (mg / kg); the degree of purification from solid particles larger than 20 μm (microns) and liquid fraction is 100%.

At the FGTF, the method of recuperative heat exchange is used – all compressor units are equipped with a gas drying module operating in temperature recovery mode. For this purpose, a chiller and a heater are integrated into the delivery line, which form an interim circuit and successively cool the gas, separate and remove the resulting condensate, and heat the gas. The fuel dried in this way enters GTPP at a temperature of +70°C and not less than 27°C above the dew point.

FGTF is equipped with a gas dew point measurement system for water and hydrocarbons with sampling device. Each gas booster machine is additionally equipped with flow viscometer.

Compressor units are fully automated, their control systems are tied by a group regulation algorithm and integrated with the upper level of the power plant's APCS. The joint ACS provides remote control of equipment, and automatic protections and alarm; it monitors the process parameters and gas contamination in the machine room of the FGTF, handles the parameters of the workflows and emergency events, issues information to the operator panel.

Operation mode of fuel gas treatment facility as part of the GTPP is continuous, with scheduled shutdowns for service and maintenance.

REFERENCE:

The East-Messoyakha oil and gas condensate field is the northernmost mainland oil field in Russia and, in terms of geology, the most complex in Western Siberia. The field is located on the Gydan Peninsula, in the Tazovsky region of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area, 340 km north of Novy Urengoy - in the Arctic climatic zone.

Eastern Messoyakha was discovered in 1990, the first oil was obtained on September 18, 2012, and the field was put into operation on September 21, 2016. The proven reserves of hydrocarbons amount to more than 300 million tons of oil and gas condensate and more than 100 billion cubic meters of gas, which makes it possible to classify the field as unique.

The bulk of oil reserves (about 70%) is hard-to-recover heavy, highly viscous, resinous, with a low content of light fractions. A high level of efficiency and safety of production processes is ensured here, among other things, by the use of digital technologies. Innovative programs in the drilling, production, treatment and transportation of oil were successfully introduced at the field.

As of April 2022, the total production amount at Eastern Messoyakha exceeded 25 million tons of oil.
